The core of our natural skin care products is a naturally occurring immune serum produced inside the immune cells of a little terrestrial mollusk that performs as the fundamental support of its innate immunity and restores health to its skin tissues and body whenever damaged.

Researchers from Spain and United States found that the snail secretion contains antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione-S-Transferase Activity (GST) activities.

Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS). SODs act as antioxidants and protect cellular components from being oxidized by reactive oxygen species.

An early study showed that a secretion from the mollusk induces skin regeneration after wound healing impairment from acute radiodermatitis. However, the molecular basis underlying this effect were unknown.

Researchers then evaluated the regenerative properties of the secretion using multiple in vitro approaches. They found that it possesses antioxidant capabilities and induces fibroblast proliferation. A complementary mechanism is provided by the fact that the secretion promotes ECM (Extra Cellular Matrix) assembly, which is essential for wound healing and tissue elasticity.

Researchers from the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York wrote: “Finally, the secretion inhibits Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMP) production, which limits the extent of the damage during wounding and scar formation. MMP are naturally produced enzymes that help regulate the skin`s ability to repair itself. Together, these mechanisms contribute to the observed beneficial effects of the snail secretion and support its use in regenerative therapy.”

Furthermore, application of the secretion twice daily for three months also results in a significant improvement of clinical and histopathological photoageing signs.

“The role of oxidation in wound healing is controversial, but there is a clear correlation between enzymatic and non-enzymatic cutaneous antioxidants and its protection from ROS-mediated skin damage induced by UV radiation. Indeed, UV radiation can decrease endogenous antioxidant levels and lead to increased damage. In these cases, antioxidant compounds can modulate abnormal remodeling after trauma or prevent or reverse clinical signs associated with photoaging secondary to ROS.”

Chile, South America.

A surprising and unexpected finding on a snail farm in Chile. The hands of the farm workers were beautiful! They were smooth and soft, pigmentation patches caused by over-exposure to the sun faded, their skin was noticeably more supple. Cuts and abrasions did not get infected, and were healing rapidly, even scars that had been there for a long time where vanishing completely.

1992

First Patent of Invention

The first patent of invention for a method to obtain snail secretions and make a cream for cosmetic purposes is issued in Chile to the Bascunan family (n° 38.615 in the Chilean Registrar, and filed at the WIPO, in Switzerland, now expired). This method utilizes outdated technology and chemical ingredients which are not as safe as the natural active ingredient is. We can say this was the ‘first generation of snail creams’.

What is in this serum that could possibly have such beneficial effects on the skin? At first it was thought Glycolic Acid and Allantoin. Later it was found that the serum is in fact much more complex and impressive than this, but initial discoveries were limited due to the technology that was available at the time. Fernando Bascunan Jr of the family who owned the snail farm, was about to become a Doctor in Medicine and his mother suggested he do his thesis about the properties of the snail secretions. Using scientific methods he confirms that the snail secretions have the capability of healing human skin and that they can be embedded in a base cream that was then popular in the skin care industry.

Skin Care Products Using Snail Serum Are Made in Chile

The first generation in collecting snail serum is used to make products with mineral oil and chemicals. This method of collecting the secretions from the snails leaves bigger molecules on the filter when the serum is filtered. But these bigger molecules which get left behind are actually important in the effective performance of the serum on human skin.

Medical Patent Involving The Snail

A patent is assigned in the US to Children’s Medical Center Corp and The University of Iowa Research Foundation for the use of a complex glycol-molecule taken from the body, and is also present in the serum, of an African snail. The glycol-molecule from the snail is used as a drug to inhibit angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the growth of blood vessels from pre-existing ones. It is through angiogenesis that a dormant tumour grows into a malignant tumour. The applicants of this patent are also requesting a patent for the use of the same glycol-molecule for the treatment of cancer and inhibiting an increase in the volume or mass of a tumour cancer growth.
