He found that the substance granted a scarless healing of injuries, cuts, scrapes and restored the skin’s health after damage done by cancer radiation therapies. He also discovered that the substance healed the skin even from chemical burns. The antibiotic factor of the snail’s serum is a glycoprotein whose molecular weight (MW) is approximately 160,000. Comp Biochem Physiol C. 1985; 82(2):345-8. The application of the cream to a zone afflicted by rosacea has surprisingly improved and diminished the symptoms of rosacea. Topical application has also helped to avoid episodes of rosacea symptoms in people that use it regularly on their face.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by four distinct clinical phases predominantly involving the central aspect of the face. The first evidence of rosacea is a frequent and intense vasodilation or flushing. In most patients this condition progresses to a vascular stage characterized by redness of the skin due to the congestion of the capillaries (erythema). Once triggered, it can continue for hours or days. Many people remain stable in this stage while some progress to an inflammatory stage defined by a symmetrical pattern of papules and pustules in addition to the persistent erythema. This stage can often become a chronic condition. Some people, mainly males, can progress to the final stage defined by swelling or a characteristic hyperplasia (abnormal increase in the amount of cells), mainly of the cells on the nose.

Rosacea skin care usually includes topical or oral antibiotics such as metranidazole and combinations such as sulfacetamide, sulfur, and azeliec acid. Nevertheless, these and other solutions for rosacea are all associated to various side effects. They are expensive and/or involve long complicated treatment. Dr. Richard Gallo, chief of dermatology, University of California, San Diego, and colleagues have recently deduced that a biological element that is part of the body's innate immune system appears to play a role in producing the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) of rosacea. (Study funded by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) to uncover potential causes and other important aspects of the skin condition during the 5º Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004, held in association with the annual meeting of the Society for Investigative Dermatology).

He realized that the body creates peptides to defend itself from viruses, fungi and bacteria. He hypothesizes that certain peptides called cathelicidins may be stimulated too quickly in rosacea sufferers. The level of the protective cathelicidins was 200 percent to 300 percent higher in rosacea sufferers. While many kinds of bacteria can stimulate the synthesis of cathelicidins, he stated that they seem to be specially susceptible to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which has been linked with rosacea in some researches.

The researchers have also realized that while the peptide is inactive when it first reaches the skin’s surface, enzymes in sweat make it active. They concluded that cathelicidins may trigger the production of bumps and pimples in rosacea. This may possibly be in association with H. pylori and other bacterial stimulators.

Interestingly enough the GAGs found in the snail’s mucus play a role in controlling the function and expression of those endogenous peptides and act as crucial defense molecules against rapidly multiplying bacteria. Control of Blood Vessel Proliferation in Rosacea.

According to Dr. Thiboutot, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a controller of blood vessel proliferation that can be associated to solar exposure, is highly present in the sebaceous glands of patients with rosacea (5º Annual Rosacea Research Workshop, 2004). She noticed that previous investigation had found that VEGF can be implicated in the creation of visible blood vessels in rosacea, and that rosacea sufferers may therefore be particularly sensitive to solar light exposure.

In a further study, researchers demonstrated that neuropeptides -- substances created by neurones or other cells in the skin -- and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays (found in solar light) seem to stimulate the release of VEGF. Dr. Richard Granstein, director of dermatology at Cornell University, informed that tiny amounts of UVB, a type of solar ray that causes sunburn, appears to boost the release of VEGF in endothelial cells -- that is, cells that line blood vessels.

In addition, UVB caused an increase in interleukin 8, which plays a role in inflammation. The peptide somatostatin, however, had an impeding effect on interleukin and on VEGF production in certain skin cells called keratinocytes. The association to rosacea is still being explored.

A study done in 2003 demonstrated that in the culture of human vascular endothelial cells, snail GAGs at 10 and 100 micro g ml(-1) inhibited VEGF-induced capillary tube generation. These findings suggest that the inhibitory effect of the snail GAGs on the creation of new capillary systems from pre-existing blood vessels is because of the restriction of excessive VEGF-induced vascular tube creation without affecting its production. This may explain reports of some rosacea sufferers that have found comfort by applying the balm twice a day on afflicted areas and others who have used it to avoid future rosacea outbreaks.
