Acne’s Effect on the Teenage Subconscious

by Judy Aulin

Acne’s Effect on the Teenage SubconsciousAccording to the American Academy of Dermatology, over 20 million North American teenagers and young adults suffer, right this instant, from acne, and at least 10 percent believe it’s the worst thing about being young.

Want to hear something even more mind-boggling concerning this skin care conundrum? It’s believed there’s not one person on the face of this earth that hasn’t had, at least, one pimple or zit in their lifetime!

Ask any acne sufferer, the subconscious takes a massive fall…

Individuals begin to hide under hats and hooded sweaters because they reject their appearance, or they little by little begin to distance themselves from society which is unhealthy, and even life-threatening.

Teenagers and young adults (18-25) tend to take the skin condition (acne) more to heart, for it toughens their chances of getting dates, making friends, doing class presentations and even getting a job. Producing unhealthy, and at times, hurtful patterns.

Anxiety, Depression, Acne…Oh My!

It wasn’t long till a group of scientists in New Zealand discovered after thorough investigation, acne was linked to anxiety, depression and even suicide.

Out of 970 students, 13 to 18 years of age, 35 percent have thought of committing suicide, and 10 percent have tried!

Skin Condition Acne doesn’t stop there!

Due to these facial and body marks, teenagers have stopped dating! Here are the resounding numbers of teenagers not dating:

Boys:  12-14: 55%
Boys: 15-17: 62%
Girls: 12-14: 50%
Girls: 15-17: 52%

It’s not entirely proven acne caused these individuals to experience such horrible emotions – the relationship between acne and suicide and social isolation still needs to be investigated to a fuller extent – We’ll keep you posted.

  • Word of advice to the parents with children dealing with acne or any skin condition capable of interrupting  mental growth: notice the signs early and look for acne treatments according to the severity of their lesions. Also, and probably much more important, maintain a support system with children. This will help tons!

  1. I truly believed that acne is the main cause of depression for many of the teenagers. This is one time where they want to look good, so acne can cause potential hazard to their emotional well being. Getting treatment is one thing, having a positive mindset is also very important.

  2. What a brilliant blog post, the way you link Acne to anxiety and depression is oh so true to so many people world wide, especially to teenage girls! I had so many of my girl friends covering them self up with make-up, hats and hoodies to hide their acne in later teenage years, such a shame!

Your post is so in touch with young female feelings; can I link to your post from my review blog please?

  3. As a teenager, I was so subconscious: of my breath smelling or my hair looking good. Acne was the biggest issue. In hindsight, it seems like such a trivial thing. I suppose the raging hormones brought with it excessive feelings of fear and anxiety. Thank God I am in my 40’s now!

    Great article. Thanks.

  4. This is a really good blog post, acne can really really have a psychological effect on teenagers and I know this from experience! A complex can soon develop in a teens head about their appearance, leading to anxiety problems which can have a traumatic effect on the individual.

  5. Acne is a bitch! I’m not surprised that acne causes anxiety and depression because you become extremely self-conscious when you have a giant pimple on top of your nose. Worst – bad acne can leave marks on your face permanently.

  6. Acne and cankersores go hand in hand as both are irritating and potentially embarrassing except acne is on the outside. I think both are just horrible things both for self esteem and general functioning though acne more typically has the social aspect linked to it. Thanks for the information.

  7. This was some interesting finds indeed. I bet that it doesn’t help with all these models in acne commercials that truly look like they never had even one pimple in their whole life. Don’t know if such persons really exist, but hey – there are people who actually do not get holes in their teeth either so…

  8. Thank you all for finding this post interesting and informative.
