Melasma Treatment Options
Melasma, which is sometimes called the mask of pregnancy, is normally a uniform brown discoloring over the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. It’s usually caused from sun exposure and/or hormonal changes (from pregnancy or birth control pills) that cause the body to produce excessive amounts of melanin in the skin.
Many times after the birth of the child, the discoloration fades but if pregnancy hasn’t caused the mask, there are other melasma treatment options such as using an alternative birth control method that doesn’t require the use of hormones, avoiding harsh soaps or cleansers, limiting sun exposure, always using a sunscreen and trying a natural skin care cream that naturally breaks down the melanin in the skin to give a more uniform complexion. If these methods don’t seem to give the relief you’re looking for, make an appointment with your doctor for a prescription.
