Keratosis Pilaris and How You Can Eliminate It

by Gerald Levin Steinert

Keratosis pilaris (or KP) is a very common skin condition. It has symptoms on the skin of rough and red bumps. Many times they are referred to as red goose bumps and chicken skin. This is a skin condition that affects around 40% of the population. The condition is an irritating one that'll have you scratching it, and this can lead to scabs. Many times you'll find it on the back of the tops of arms, the tops of the thighs, and the buttocks. Adolescents are usually the ones who suffer most from the symptoms of KP. The majority of people who suffer the condition are children. Men experience the condition less than women do.

How KP starts is through an excess amount of keratin being produced. Keratin is the natural protein that is found within the skin. What then happens is it surrounds and traps the hair follicles. This is where the hard plugs that are formed come from. They are the red dots we are all so familiar with.

While there is no life threatening reason to eliminate it there are a number of ways that you can get this unattractive condition off your skin and be happy with clear skin texture again.

The first skin care tip we recommend to solve KP is to exfoliate your skin. Please do not use any prescription scrub. So often these kinds of scrubs only come with chemical ingredients. Sensitive skin types don't take well to these. It is worth noting to as well refrain from using exfoliation treatments that have the ingredient of benzoyl peroxide. These only dry your skin out further which is not helping the problem.

What is on the other hand recommended to treat the skin condition of KP is Vitamin A, or Retinoid. What this serves to accomplish is the natural acceleration of the rate at which sick and dead skin cells are eliminated. And that has the beneficial effect of clearing up blocked skin pores. And we all know from earlier in the article that blocked skin pores are the root cause of so many KP symptoms.

A second rather important piece of advice: There's a strong need throughout your bouts of suffering keratosis pilaris symptoms that an effective moisturizer be used. However at this stage of the condition your skin can only handle moisturizers consisting only of natural ingredients. Any other moisturizer and their harsh chemicals will be too burdensome. Maintain yourself and your moisturizer to only the best of natural ingredients. What the recommended moisturizing ingredients concerning keratosis pilaris are will be that of Vitamin E oil. This can be included into a few tablespoons that you can then insert in a tub full of warm water when you are ready to take a bath.

Microdermabrasion is another effective route to take when curing keratosis pilaris that uses a wire brush to create a suction action that can remove even the hardest keritinized plugs while leaving the skin smooth and toned afterwards.
